One of Quebec’s 10 most wanted criminals, Hells Angels member Frédéric Landry-Hétu, was arrested early Saturday morning at a cottage in St-Michel-des-Saints in the Lanaudière region.

Landry-Hétu, 44, was wanted on 22 counts of murder and conspiracy to commit murder, as well as drug trafficking and gangsterism. He did not resist when members of the Sûreté du Québec’s tactical squad arrested him at about 4 a.m. Saturday, said Sûreté du Québec Sgt. Gregory Gomez.

Landry-Hétu’s arrest warrant was one of 156 issued in April of 2009 under Operation SharQc (Stratégie Hells Angels Région Québec), a sweeping police crackdown on all five Quebec chapters of the Hells Angels biker gang triggered after a full-patch member turned informant.

The arrest of Landry-Hétu brings to 144 the number of gang members and associates arrested under Operation SharQc, including 123 on a single day (April 15, 2009).

Landry-Hétu, a member of the South chapter of the Hells in St-Basile-le-Grand, was to be charged via video conference sometime Saturday in Montreal, Gomez said.

Operation SharQc, along with an earlier operation (Operation Springtime 2001), all but wiped out the five Quebec chapters of the Hells Angels. The arrests hinged on information obtained through several insider informants, particularly regarding a secret vote in 1994 taken by the entire Quebec membership of the Hells Angels. The membership voted in favour of engaging in a bloody turf war with rival gangs that resulted in the death of 160 people between 1994 and 2002, including several innocent bystanders.

Arrest warrants from Operation SharQc are still outstanding for 12 men: Antonio Castella, Claude Gauthier, Gaétan Brisebois, Guy Rodrigue, Jean-Judes Faucher, Luc Émond, Marc Bordage, Marcellin Morin, Mario Bergeron, Michel Bergeron, Michel Grenier and Pierrot Lachapelle.
