Obama Colorado Gun Control

WASHINGTON — In danger of losing congressional momentum, President Barack Obama is drawing attention to Colorado’s newly passed gun control laws as he applies public pressure on Congress to pass similar federal measures.

Obama was traveling to the Denver suburbs Wednesday, stepping up his call for universal background checks for gun buyers as well as his demands for Congress to at least vote on an assault weapons ban and limits on large-capacity ammunition magazines.

The trip is heavy with political symbolism. Colorado expanded background checks and placed restrictions on magazines despite being a state with a deep-rooted hunting tradition, where gun ownership is a cherished right. Moreover, Obama will meet with law enforcement officials and community leaders at the Denver Police Academy, not far from the Aurora suburb where a gunman last summer killed 12 people in a movie theater. The president’s trip is occurring in the same week that prosecutors announced they would seek the death penalty for James Holmes, accused of carrying out the Aurora rampage.

Alexis Wright

Legal experts say Alexis Wright could sell the rights to her Zumba sex scandal story despite admitting guilt for prostitution.
Zumba instructor and single mom moonlights as hooker. From the start, the case against Alexis Wright read like the TV Guide synopsis for one of those steamy Lifetime made-for-television movies.

There was Wright, the raven-haired fitness instructor who taught Zumba to soccer moms in a picturesque New England town while leading a double life as a prostitute with a customer list that was said to include prominent people, all of whom were secretly videotaped in the act.

There was also the business partner who watched via Skype from 100 miles away. The pizza delivery guy who got an eyeful when Wright dropped her towel. And the tenants in Wright’s building who got suspicious about all the moaning and groaning.

  • Authorities organized a massive manhunt Tuesday for two prisoners, including one awaiting trial on a capital murder charge, who escaped from an East Texas jail.

The Hopkins County Sheriff’s Office says Brian Allen Tucker of Sulphur Springs and John Marlin King of Cumby escaped from the Hopkins County Jail on Tuesday morning. The two men are believed to be wearing white T-shirts and boxer shorts, Deputy Alvin Jordan said. Their black-and-white jail uniforms were found on rail tracks a short distance east of the jail.

A female foreign tourist was kidnapped, raped and robbed on a minibus in Rio de Janeiro, police said, highlighting security concerns in the Brazilian city that will host matches in the 2014 World Cup and will put on the Summer Olympics two years later.

A male foreign tourist on the minibus was also held captive and robbed, according to Rio police.

Police said they would not release the identities or nationalities of the victims, but the U.S. Embassy said Monday that one of the two is an American citizen, and a U.S. State Department official on Monday said the woman raped was a U.S. citizen.

The Israeli military said two rockets fired from the Gaza Strip struck southern Israel on Wednesday, causing no casualties, hours after it launched its first air strikes in the Palestinian enclave in four months.

Israeli planes had gone into action on Tuesday, targeting what the military described as “two extensive terror sites in the northern Gaza Strip”, after three rockets were fired into Israel earlier that day, causing no casualties or damage.

An al Qaeda-linked group, Magles Shoura al-Mujahadeen, claimed responsibility for Tuesday’s rocket salvo, saying it was responding to the death earlier in the day of a Palestinian prisoner in an Israel jail. There was no immediate claim for Wednesday’s rocket fire.

The sound of passing freight trains is a constant backdrop in this small southeast Iowa community.

So is the sight of people driving around lowered gates at the Fourth Street crossing, says a women who lives near the tracks.

A young mother’s fateful decision to proceed around the gates and across a double set of tracks — her view blocked by a train on the first set of tracks — killed two of her daughters and sent her and a third child to the hospital Monday afternoon.

Police in Rio de Janeiro have arrested a third man in connection with the brutal gang rape of a foreign student in the city last Saturday.

The US woman and a French companion were taking an illegal van service from the Copacabana beachside neighbourhood towards the centre when the driver and two other men in the van forced out other passengers after robbing them.

The men then drove off with the two foreigners. The 21-year-old woman was raped repeatedly as the men took turns driving the van. Her male travelling companion was tied up and beaten during her ordeal.

The two were held for six hours as the three attackers used their credit cards to withdraw money and buy drinks in petrol stations. Images recorded at the stations helped to identify the three men.
