The Israeli military said two rockets fired from the Gaza Strip struck southern Israel on Wednesday, causing no casualties, hours after it launched its first air strikes in the Palestinian enclave in four months.

Israeli planes had gone into action on Tuesday, targeting what the military described as “two extensive terror sites in the northern Gaza Strip”, after three rockets were fired into Israel earlier that day, causing no casualties or damage.

An al Qaeda-linked group, Magles Shoura al-Mujahadeen, claimed responsibility for Tuesday’s rocket salvo, saying it was responding to the death earlier in the day of a Palestinian prisoner in an Israel jail. There was no immediate claim for Wednesday’s rocket fire.

Some 4,500 Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails sent back their food on Wednesday morning as part of a protest launched following the death from cancer of a Palestinian inmate which the PA blamed on Israeli medical negligence.

Palestinian prisoners declared a three-day hunger strike on Tuesday following the death of 63-year-old Maissara Abu Hamdiyeh, a Hamas member who was serving a life term for his role in a thwarted 2002 terror plot to blow up a Jerusalem restaurant.

An autopsy of Hamdiyeh’s body was scheduled to take place Wednesday at the Institute of Forensic Medicine at Abu Kabir in Tel Aviv in the presence of a Palestinian observer. The body will then be transferred to the Palestinian Authority for burial.

Hamdiyeh’s funeral was scheduled to take place Thursday in his hometown of Hebron.

JERUSALEM — Hundreds of Palestinian prisoners staged protests in Israeli jails on Tuesday as the Palestinian leadership accused Israel of deliberately delaying the treatment of a fellow prisoner who died that morning of cancer.

Maysara Abu Hamdiya, 64, a retired general in the Palestinian Authority security services, died in a hospital in southern Israel two months after receiving a diagnosis of throat cancer. Mr. Hamdiya was detained by Israel in 2002, at the height of the second Palestinian uprising, and was serving a life term for attempted murder after sending a suicide bomber to a cafe in Jerusalem, Israeli officials said. The bomb failed to detonate.
