At least seven people were killed early Tuesday in a militant attack on a power grid station outside Peshawar, the provincial capital of insurgency-riven Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province. Dozens of militants, believed to be Taliban, attacked the 500-kilowatt grid station, killing four government employees and three police officers. The militants planted bombs inside the compound and took four employees hostage. The explosions destroyed the offices and control room of the station, resulting in a power breakdown that lasted for several hours in Peshawar and neighboring areas. As the country gears for general elections on May 11, militants have stepped up their attacks on government installations and security forces, and have threatened to attack election rallies.
