A 29-year-old Queensland police officer has died after his four-wheel drive crashed near Georgetown, about 400 kilometres west of Cairns.

Police say the Mareeba constable Casey Blain was conducting a routine patrol about 15 kilometres east of Georgetown this morning when the four-wheel drive he was driving veered off Routh Creek Bridge around 10:30am (AEST).

A passing motorist found the officer beneath the bridge inside the upturned vehicle.police

Queensland Police Commissioner Ian Stewart says Constable Blain was a valued member of the service and his death would be a loss felt by the extended police family.

“All members of the Queensland Police Service are saddened by this tragic news; however our sorrow and pain cannot compare to that of Casey’s family and friends,” he said.

“Constable Blain was working today, out on patrol and not home spending Easter with his wife and young child.

“He was committed to the safety of the community and his loss will be deeply felt.”

Police Union president Ian Leavers paid tribute to the young officer.

“Constable Casey Blain was relieving at the Georgetown Police Station it has been a very tragic event and it has sent shockwaves throughout the entire police family,” he said.

“Our thoughts go out at this point in time to his wife and four-year-old son.”

Constable Blain, who grew up in the Mareeba area, graduated from the Townsville Police Academy in 2009 and before working in the Mareeba Police District.
